Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to upgrade a collection of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which operate penstocks controlling motion of ships between the sea and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
pressure gauge octa of A-range actuators had reached the tip of their operational life after long service in a challenging surroundings. BAE Systems wished to retain all the advantages of electric actuators, so IQ3 actuators have been chosen. These needed to be specially tailored by Rotork to beat problems round confined spaces and tough access.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes were mechanically tailored in order that each actuator and gearbox might be operated by hand without entering the confined house. Rotork designed special hand auto levers and thru drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to remove the need for confined space access.
Actuators inside the IQ vary are watertight, providing ingress safety to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have a complicated dual stacked show with configurable data logger functionality, and an absolute place sensor offers reliability and accuracy.
